Summer in Izola: where everyone finds their beach
Summer – the time of basking in the sun and indulging in everything our sea has to offer is just around the corner. There are eight diverse beaches on about 5 kilometres of the coast in Izola. Do you know all of them?
From an underwater archaeological site to the dog beach
Izola has the most diverse beaches in Slovenia: bathing areas with facilities, natural and wild beaches, sandy bays, an underwater archaeological site, a beach for people with physical impairments and even a beach for dogs.
The beach Bele skale, located under the cliff in Strunjan Landscape Park, is perfect for freedom lovers who want to escape the summer crowds. On the way there, you can enjoy the view of the wild, unspoiled nature and our fishermen town. Only a few hundred metres away is one of the most popular places for youth – the beach under Belvedere, a pleasant spot to cool down in the warm days.
Family fun in the Simonov zaliv bay
The Simonov zaliv bay is known as one of the most family-friendly corners of the coast. The sandy bay, the beach volleyball court, the waterslide and the events in the nearby archaeological park, each summer turn San Simon into a perfect family experience. You can try different water sports; rent a kayak, pedalboat or a SUP board. SUP boards can also be rented at the Tourist information centre Izola. A novelty at the beach is a renovated bar, which calls for a coffee or cocktail break. Your youngest family members can enjoy the playground in the vicinity.
Beach by the lighthouse with the view of the Alps
Local’s favourite is one of the most iconic beaches in the Slovenian Istria, located in the very centre of the town – beach by the lighthouse, which boasts an incredible view of the Debeli rtič cape, the town of Koper and the Strunjan Landscape Park. When the skies are clear, your view can reach Trieste and even the snow-covered Alps. Great benefits of this beach are safe access to the sea, the shade under the nearby trees, and a children's playground area. This is why the beach is very popular among parents and children. In June, the area under the pine trees becomes a venue for the international film festival Kino Otok – Isola Cinema.
New seaside experience: Museum Detective
If you would like to discover some marine stories of Izola besides just enjoying yourself at the beach, we invite you to visit Izolana – House of the Sea, where a series of documentary photographs, video clips, and various exhibition pieces reveal the town's marine and maritime character. In the House of the Sea, your children can test their knowledge in a detective game of finding the hidden treasure. After completing challenges, solving riddles and finding the hidden treasure, there is a creative workshop where children acquaint themselves with ship modelling and create their special marine souvenir.
You won't be bored even in the evenings after enjoying the sun rays on one of the eight beaches in Izola. We are preparing new interesting experience: children will be able to test their skills in a treasure hunt in Izolana – House of the sea.
The aroma of local mussels
If you are not a fan of fishing but you still like the taste of seafood, we invite you to Days of local mussels, a culinary event involving as many as 22 restaurateurs. Food will also be the main theme of other summer events: in August, the streets will be filled with the aroma of tomato sauce, while in September we will enjoy basil, spicy flavours and, for the first time, baccalà (dried and salted cod). Mediterranean cuisine will also be present at the biggest event in Izola – the traditional Fishermen's Feast, featuring a varied musical program.
