Days of Fish: Fruit of the Adriatic

November and December will be characterized by a culinary event – the Days of the Kingdom of Fish. Just like they did with asparagus, Mediterranean mussels and cod fish, the selected Izola caterers will now pamper your taste buds with delightful fish treats that will travel from their Adriatic kingdom to your plates from 28 November until 13 December. The Zero kilometre initiative – like all culinary events – guarantees freshness and local sourcing of all dishes prepared during the Days of Fish.

Experts recommend to eat it at least twice a week!

Fishing Wrote the Story of our City

It was fishing that turned our small seaside village into a town and transported its name far and wide. At the beginning of the 20th century, our sea was full of fish, which enabled the development of commercial fishing. The fishing was supported by wooden vessels that were built in small shipyards – the first traditional shipyards called squeri and later the famous “2. Oktober” shipyard. The fish processing industry created numerous new jobs as well as a rapid increase in Izola’s population and opportunities for progress.

Today, only small groups of fishermen still fish in their boats, a remnant of the once mighty fishing fleet. Fishing has left a significant mark on Izola, which can be felt in the city every step of the way.

Fish for Health

Fish flesh boasts more healthy nutrients than any other food. Nutrition, rich in fish, ensures a wholesome development of the human organism even before birth; it is also known as food for the brain, because it increases our mental and physical skills during adulthood and slows down the aging process. These benefits are largely contributed to the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The advantage of fish meat over red meat is first and foremost its ease of digestion, which is why people with health problems can eat fish as well. Fish is also included in many diets.

Fish provide our bodies with proteins, omega-3 essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.

By eating fish, we strengthen our immune system and combat depression, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, asthma and other health problems.

Kingdom of Fish in Your Hand

The time between catching and cooking the fish is crucial for the quality and health benefits of fish dishes. The Days of the Kingdom of Fish are the result of the respect for this discovery, which is why we invite you to join us, so that we can show that we care about what we eat. We will also express our appreciation and wish to only have fresh and seasonal sea food on our plates.
