EXPERIENCES

The experiences in Izola are marked by the colours blue and green. The blue of the sea invites us to enjoy the waves and to discover the natural and cultural heritage of the town. Meanwhile, the equally rich rural surroundings invite us to take part in active leisure time activities in the Istrian hills and romantic villages. Bad weather rarely affects our plans, since we have an average of 300 sunny days a year, but you will not get bored even with rain. When you need pampering and a quiet moment to yourself, visit one of the wellness centres in Izola.

A DIVE INTO THE PAST

Archaeology enthusiasts can explore the remains of a Roman harbour even below the sea.  The seabed is sinking along the Slovenian coast and rising on the Italian side of the gulf. The seabed and the sea level were higher here in the Roman era and this is why all the remains of the Roman harbours are underwater. Take a scuba diving exploration tour among the remains of the Roman harbour in the Archaeological Park in the Simonov zaliv bay.

Scuba diving tours are organized throughout the summer, upon prior reservation at mateja.ravnik@zrs.upr.si or +386 (0)5 617 70 90.

LEARNING ABOUT THE ADRIATIC FISH IN IZOLANA

The Izolana museum, the House of the Sea, invites us to discover the maritime cultural heritage of Izola, while practicing fishing and learning about the fauna of the Adriatic Sea. The interactive fishing game is designed for every age and can be played by two players at a time. Through the game you will learn about the physical characteristics of various fish, their swimming skills, at what depth they live, and which family they belong to. You will be fishing with a simulated hook and storing the catch into a typical bucket, called bujol.

CYCLING ALONG THE ABANDONED RAILWAY

There are various cycling and hiking trails connecting the beautiful medieval town of Izola with its neighbouring towns and villages. Parenzana is the most attractive among these trails: this 130-kilometre cycling route follows the abandoned railway that once connected Trieste (Italy) and Poreč (Croatia). Take a hike or cycle along the Parenzana trail.

DISCOVER THE WATER SOURCES OF THE COUNTRYSIDE

The water supply system made life easier in the countryside but it also inadvertently changed the attitude of the locals towards water and water sources. You can visit the water sources that once supplied fresh water to the countryside on a 14-kilometre trail around the village of Korte. There is a story behind each and every one of them.

Discover the stories of the water sources of the countryside on a hiking trip, organized twice a year (spring and autumn) by the members of the Tourist Association Šparžin in Korte. Beside the water sources, the local stories and the representation of life in the countryside, you will also visit the wine cellars of local producers and taste their products.

REACH THE TOP OF THE CLIFF OF THE STRUNJAN LANDSCAPE PARK

Izola borders on the Strunjan landscape park, right at its most interesting part – the 80-metre Strunjan cliff, which has been declared a part of the natural reserve, along with its green rim and a 200-metre wide strip of the sea. This is also the longest stretch of pristine, natural seashore along the 130 km of coastal line between Grado (Italy) and Savudrija (Croatia) that defines the Gulf of Trieste. The steep wall and the pebbly beach at the foot of the cliff are left to the mercy of the natural phenomena. The sea, the rain and the wind are tirelessly beating on the crumbly layers of rock, designing the ever-changing features of the cliff.

BATHING AND KNEIPPING

The indoor swimming pools of the Delfin hotel offer an area of 160 m2 for swimmers and another 140 m2 for non-swimmers. All the indoor swimming pools are filled with heated seawater, with the temperatures ranging from 30 to 33 ºC. The temperature is similar in the indoor pool of the San Simon resort.

Enjoy a special experience on Kneipp’s path in the Delfin hotel. Kneipping is named after one of the greatest healers of all times, Sebastian Kneipp, who was one of the first to discover the healing power of water treatments. The most popular of his methods is the contrast treatment that consists of immersing arms and feet in warm and cold water alternately, and promotes circulation, fights fatigue, reinvigorates and strengthens both the body and the mind. The peaceful Kneipp garden in front of the Delfin hotel offers a special method of relaxation as well. A circular path runs through the garden, with basins for cold baths for arms and legs. Take a stroll in the garden, sit on the benches and enjoy the aromas of numerous plants.
