The proximity of the fertile lands provide for a unique blend of Istrian and maritime cuisine. The traditional dishes of the rural outskirts are based on homegrown produce, thriving among the vineyards and olive groves, while the seaside cuisine relies on fish and molluscs. Local restauranteurs are committed to the “kilometre zero” initiative, which means that you will always enjoy authentic dishes prepared according to traditional recipes, using local, fresh and wholesome ingredients. Local homegrown produce is also sold at the farmer’s market during summer.

Enjoy the many flavours of Izola!

Traditional fishing and the fishing industry transformed a small seaside village into a world-renowned town. Due to vast quantities of fish, commercial fishing began in the early 20th century and with its rapid development the population of Izola increased drastically. The fish processing plant and a large fishing fleet created jobs and opportunities for further development, but it all suddenly came to a halt with Slovenia’s independence, the loss of fishing grounds and the dwindling of fish stocks. Nowadays, only a few small groups of fishermen fish in these waters, reminding us of the once majestic fleet. Still, fishing left a strong mark that can be still perceived in every corner of the town of Izola.

The winemakers of Izola have been proudly producing four colours of wine for centuries. Beside the excellent reds and whites, Izola is also known for its rosé. In the last few years, the aromatic orange wine, produced according to ancient methods of must fermentation, joined these traditional colours. The favourable location of the family-owned vineyards, where knowledge and skills are passed down through generations, gives a particular flavour and depth to the local wines. The warm Mediterranean winds carry the sea air to the surrounding hills where the grapes ripen in the sun-kissed vineyards.

Upon request, it is possible to arrange a visit to the wine cellars and take a stroll through the vineyards of different winemakers.

To taste a great olive oil you only need a plate and some bread. Anyone who owns at least one olive tree will agree. High-quality olive oil sets the standard in Izola and the locals are quick to dismiss the imported oil mixtures sold at the grocery stores. However, the demanding palates of the locals are understandable, since olives have been growing on the Istrian soil since the classical era. Oil production has only stopped for a brief period in the 19th century, and has been quickly developing over the past three decades.

Great location, the number of sunny days and the proximity of the sea are the key ingredients for the exceptional flavour of local olive oils. There is a professional laboratory in Izola that controls the quality of olive oil, discovers adulterated oil and ensures the traceability of products with a protected geographical indication. The olive oil producers from Izola have received many prestigious international awards.

Upon request, it is possible to arrange a tour of the olive mills or join the olive harvest in autumn.

There are still small wooden fishing boats floating around the harbour of Izola, where the fishermen sell their daily catch. Sit back in the cool shade of the restaurant’s terrace, with the smell of sea in the air, and enjoy a glass of locally made wine, while the staff spoils you with delicacies provided by the Istrian land and its long-standing culinary traditions.
