May Day holidays by the sea: catching the sun in Izola
Easter and May Day holidays are rapidly approaching. We invite you to spend the longer sunny days by the sea, surrounded by nature and delicious cuisine. In Izola, we will also enjoy the Easter Beerfest, the 33rd Spring Cup regatta and the Orange Wine Festival.
Discover footpaths by the sea and in the hinterland
The spring weather is just warm enough, perfect for lovers of physical activities such as cycling, skateboarding and hiking. Embark on a hiking or cycling journey with friends or family along the Istrian trails, which will definitely make a lasting impression with their panoramic views that the locals simply call vište (vistas).
The most well-known and maintained cycling trail, the Route of health and friendship – Parenzana is quite dynamic and not very demanding. An excursion along this trail is suitable for all sports enthusiasts as well as amateur recreation lovers, who are not afraid of a challenge. The path will lead you from Izola all the way to the Sečovlje Saltworks. If you are in shape for a longer trip, you can follow the path even further and continue your journey in Croatia. There is outdoor sports training equipment along the way and the path is also enticing for walkers. Another very popular spot for recreation is the former coastal road between Izola and Koper, where you can get some sea air with a beneficial effect on the respiratory system. The road also hides some interesting marine stories.
Follow the path of marine heritage and visit Izolana – House of the sea
Along the coastal road, you can already follow markings or designated signs, identifying marine tangible and intangible heritage. By scanning the QR code you will be transported into a virtual museum and listen to stories written by the sea. The signs can also be found throughout the town, as well as in the neighbouring municipality of Piran. Take a walk to the archaeological park with the former Roman port beneath the sea surface in the Simonov zaliv bay, to the boat Biser – the last fishing boat in the fleet of the former factory Delamaris, all the way to the mandracchio – a former fishing port, and to the lighthouse, where you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Alps and the Gulf of Trieste. You absolutely shouldn’t miss the opportunity to visit the greatest treasure trove of marine history, Izolana – House of the sea, located in Alme Vivode Street 3. During the holidays, it will be open between 14:00 and 18:00 every day. Pay a visit and get to know all the secrets of the sea and the stories of our fishermen.
Indulge in Istrian culinary specialties
Thanks to the proximity of the sea and the hinterland, Izola offers an incredibly diverse assortment of dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. The majority of the restaurants in Izola are taking part in the initiative Zero kilometre, which means that the served dishes are always prepared with local, fresh, and healthy ingredients, following traditional local recipes. Until the end of the month, you can pamper your taste buds at the culinary event Asparagus Days, which includes 18 taverns and restaurants in Izola.
Gastronomy – the main theme of upcoming events
Flavours will be the main theme of some other events as well. Easter Beerfest, where various brewers will present their products, will take place on Saturday, 20th April. During the day there will be a rowing regatta and a table football tournament with prize draws, while in the evening you will be able to enjoy an entertainment program with three musical groups. Easter holidays are also the time for the 33rd Spring Cup – International Sailing Regatta. We are all looking forward to another edition of the Orange Wine Festival – International festival of macerated wines, which is held in Izola on the last Friday in April of every year and sparks enthusiasm among lovers of fine wine. In the morning of May 1st, we will be greeted by the Izola Wind Orchestra with their 1st May Wake up.
