Spend your winter holiday at the seaside in Izola

Most families with children spend their winter holiday in the snow skiing, snowboarding and sledding. But if you are not a fan of crowded ski slopes and wish to spend your holiday in the sun while gazing across the sea, why not choose spending your holiday in Izola?

Wintertime is not merely about adventures in the snow. Plenty of opportunities for an active holiday can also be found in the Slovenian Istria.

The pleasant climate as well as the nature in and around Izola will lure you to an abundance of sports activities that can be enjoyed in the wintertime. Our recommendation is to walk or cycle the surrounding hills and villages offering a wide range of dedicated trails and routes. Do not hesitate to follow them into the hinterland along the coast, through the vineyards and olive tree plantations. You can also put on your roller skates and enjoy the coastal road all the way to the neighbouring city of Koper and back. If you are up for a longer trip, the famous Parenzana cycling path will definitely not disappoint. Furthermore, the Strunjan Landscape Park offers magnificent views across the open sea.

If you are eager to learn about the cultural heritage, take a walk around the town and explore historical sites. The heritage has a deep connection to the sea and can be found almost everywhere in Izola. To learn more about it, visit our Tourist Information Centre (at the address Sončno nabrežje 4) and browse through many brochures, which will reveal the secrets of the sea to you. The route will take you all the way to the museum Izolana – House of the Sea, where you can discover the history of Izola. Why not try on 3D VR glasses for a taste of virtual reality, while children can experience fishing with Bepi the Fisherman. The Pietro Coppo room on the renovated first floor will take you into the past. You can also learn about all the important athletes of Izola and take a ride through the “Parenzana Tunnel” towards Izola. Once you have learnt all about the former narrow-gauge railway Parenzana, you can proceed to the central area where the history of fishing and the fish-processing industry is shown. Tip: Children will definitely like the real captain’s bridge of a fishing boat.

The sea can also be enjoyed through culinary experiences. Visit one of the many restaurants and inns in Izola to treat yourself to healthy sea fish, such as sardines and sardelles. They are all rich in vitamin D and Omega-3 acids. In the evenings, attractive indoor swimming pools invite you for a swim. Of course, you can also kick back in one of the many wellness and spa centres. We also recommend you see a good movie at the Art Kino Odeon cinema. During the winter holiday season, there will be plenty of events to choose from. One of them is a bicycle race called the Slovenian Istria Grand Prix (Velika nagrada slovenske Istre).
