The Izola Male Choir continues the long-standing choral tradition of the coastal town of Izola, where various mixed, male, and other vocal ensembles have flourished in the past. The choir was founded in 2005 under the guidance of the experienced conductor Mirjana Bonin, who led the group for over five years, carrying out the essential and demanding foundational work.
Today, the choir’s repertoire includes traditional and composed choral works by various authors, cultures, and themes. With great sensitivity, the singers perform love songs, drinking songs, partisan and sacred melodies – both a cappella and with instrumental accompaniment. They regularly participate in the Primorska poje festival and have sung at the traditional Ob kresni noči choral event in Škocjan, the Hungarian choral festival in Szentgotthárd (Monošter), and many other events in Slovenia and abroad.
The choir members especially enjoy performing at municipal and local events, as well as at numerous occasional performances in their hometown, where – together with the people of Izola – they strive to grow in number and continue improving the quality of their musical expression. The choir currently has 22 singers.
Their goals for the future include raising the level of their repertoire, planning concert projects for the years ahead, and attracting new members from Izola and the surrounding area. They aspire to infuse their performances with a Mediterranean spirit and the multicultural character of their coastal town, making the choir recognizable through its distinctive multilingual identity.
