A major hit of Slovenian cinema in the 1980s and a groundbreaking youth film that brought the national film industry back to the seaside — to Piran, Portorož, and the salt pans.
The story follows a teenager, Tomaž, during what is likely his last childhood summer. While playing on the beach, he forgets about the arguments between his divorced parents, who are too busy with their own lives to notice that their son is growing up faster than they expected. One of the few people who understands Tomaž’s struggles is the elderly Luka, a former sailor who gives him a seashell. Every time he listens to the sound of the sea inside the shell, as Luka tells him, he will be able to relive memories of the summer — his first love, his first romantic touch, and his summer friends. That summer, Tomaž transforms from a boy into a man, now capable of making important decisions and taking on responsibility.
"A Summer in a Sea Shell" received the Audience Award at the Week of Slovenian Film in Celje in 1986 and the Grand Prize for Best Film at the 16th Giffoni Film Festival.
