In the Footsteps of Our Grandmothers

You are invited to a 2-hour themed guided tour combining a walk through the historic old town of Izola and a visit to the Izolana Museum – House of the Sea. The experience begins with a walk through the town, where you will discover Izola through the lives of people who lived with the sea and from the sea. The focus will be on the fish processing industry, our grandmothers and grandfathers, fishermen, šavrinke, and the town’s landmarks that shaped everyday life in Izola.

During the walk, you will uncover the stories of women who came from the Istrian hinterland to work in fish factories, learn about the rhythm of work and life by the sea, and explore the role of faith, traditions, and community. A significant part of the tour is also dedicated to fishermen – their work, the dangers at sea, and the close bond between the town and the sea that has shaped Izola’s pulse for centuries.

In the second part of the programme, you will visit the Izolana Museum, where audiovisual materials, photographs, and personal testimonies will deepen your understanding of everything you have heard during the walk.

This guided tour is a tribute to generations of women and men who are not written about in textbooks, yet without whom Izola would not be what it is today. In the Footsteps of Our Grandmothers is a story of work, perseverance, solidarity, and the success of our ancestors.
