Guided tour: Izola under the wings of the Venetian Lion
Location: Izola – Old Town Centre & Podestat Palace
Organizer: Tourist Board Izola
Time: 10.00 am
Entrance fee: 4,00 - 8,00 €
On 31 January, the world-famous Venetian Carnival comes to life in Venice – the city turns into a stage of masks, dance, and lavish imagery. However, Venetian influence did not remain confined to the lagoon: centuries of the Venetian Republic left a strong mark on Izola as well, shaping its streets, buildings, and symbols.
For this reason, the Izola Tourist Association is organising a professional thematic guided tour dedicated to the city’s Venetian heritage. During the walk, participants will discover Venetian traces in the urban landscape, learn about the symbolism of the Winged Lion of St Mark, and explore the connections between Adriatic cities – from trade and governance to cultural and culinary influences that can still be recognised in Izola today.
During the tour, visitors will learn how and why Venetian symbolism spread to the towns of Istria and where it can still be found in Izola.
A special part of the tour will be dedicated to the Podestà Palace: its interior will be visited, the renovation process will be presented, and the challenges faced both during its construction in the 17th century and its restoration in the 21st century will be explained.
Participants will also discover interesting facts about the Church of St Mary d’Alieto and visit its interior.
The tour will also touch upon legends and stories that connect Izola with Venice – offering a slightly different, Venetian-coloured perspective of the town.
Special added value of the tour:
– visit to the interior of the Podestà Palace
– visit to the Church of St Mary d’Alieto (interior)
The guided tour is suitable for everyone: for those who wish to get to know Izola better, for history lovers, and for families.
