The holiday, which was celebrated as a local holiday by the people of Izola for 448 years, from 1380 until 1828, when it was abolished by the local authorities, originated as a commemoration of the distant 23rd October 1380, when the Genoese fleet sailed in front of Izola. Legend has it that the helpless townspeople took refuge in the church to pray. A white dove flew from the church over the Genoese fleet, which could not see the shore because of the miraculous misty cloud with which St Mawer had covered Izola. The fleet followed the dove, convinced that it was flying close to land, but it took them far out to sea. The dove returned to the church and released an olive branch from its beak as a sign of peace and safety. At that time, the people of Izola chose a dove with an olive branch in its beak as the municipality's coat of arms. To commemorate the legend, various games were organised between the towns that were part of the Serenissima - the Venetian Republic - with an emphasis on rowing regattas, with the aim of maintaining and strengthening the friendship between the towns of the northern Adriatic.
