Story:
The story of a seventeen-year-old boy who, after years of estrangement, is forced to live under the same roof as his older half-brother captures the pulse of the Irish working-class city of Cork and reveals the strength of family ties despite their differences.
Seventeen-year-old Christy must leave his foster family in the suburbs and move in with his older half-brother Shane. Although he believes this is only a temporary arrangement, he soon settles into his new environment. Among the working-class community, he finds new friends despite his family’s bad reputation – even thanks to cutting hair! Shane, who takes on a fatherly role, is determined to provide his brother with a better future.
“The film is set in the north of Cork, where the non-profit Kabin Studio is also located. My friend Gary has been running hip-hop workshops for children there for the past ten or fifteen years. Christy was originally conceived as a short film. Since we wanted non-professional child actors, we looked for them there. It is a refuge where everyone can be who they are. It is located in a working-class neighbourhood, within a marginalised community where, I believe, self-expression is not taken for granted. People hold back, they do not dare to step outside the norm, but this place encourages it. How could we not include rap in the film when all these kids are rappers?” (Brendan Canty)
