Eleven-year-old Lučka lives by a lighthouse with her father. One day, as punishment, she is sent to work in the Black House, where she meets Edward, a boy with a fish tail. Lučka must decide whether to save her new friend or return to her father. A fantastical story based on a bestselling novel.
The story takes place in a time when dangerous pirates sailed the seas and traveling circuses displayed people with unusual physical features. Nine-year-old Lučka lives with her father, a lighthouse keeper. Every evening, she climbs to the top of the lighthouse and lights the lamp. But one stormy night, everything goes wrong. When she runs out of matches, she cannot light the lamp, and a ship runs aground on the rocks. As punishment, she is sent to work in the Black House, where a monster lives.
The large, decaying house is almost abandoned. Only a handful of frightened servants remain. But Lučka has no choice. She must take care of the monster locked in the tower. His name is Edward, and instead of legs, he has a fin. Edward is angry at the whole world and longs for the love of his strict father, the Admiral. The Admiral is ashamed of his disabled son and demands that he learn to walk. Clever Edward can do everything—except walk.
Lučka feels lonely and deeply misses her father, who is confined to the lighthouse. Despite everything, she befriends Edward. Secretly, she takes him to the sea. Together, they discover that far away he has a family of mermaids. When the Admiral returns from a long voyage and discovers that his son, because of Lučka, behaves like a fish, he takes drastic measures. He orders Lučka’s father to be hanged from the highest mast. Lučka is faced with an impossible choice: will she save her father or her best friend?
The film is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Annet Schaap, published in Slovenian by Sanje (2019). The “adventurous story with pirates and mermaids” (Samanta Coraci, Primorske novice) has received prestigious literary awards.
