Time: 11.00 am

The Izola legend dates back to 1380, when a Genoese fleet sailed towards Izola. According to tradition, the frightened townspeople turned to prayer, while St Maurus is said to have hidden the town in a thick fog. A white dove led the Genoese ships far out to sea, then returned and dropped an olive branch from its beak as a sign of peace and safety.
In memory of this event, the people of Izola celebrated their local holiday for as many as 448 years, from 1380 to 1828. The dove with an olive branch also became the symbol of the municipal coat of arms, while the celebrations once included various games and rowing regattas connecting towns of the former Venetian Republic along the northern Adriatic.
During the celebration of the Izola legend, Lonka will once again come alive with a full day of events. Visitors can enjoy stalls, a music programme, activities for children and pleasant socialising inspired by one of Izola’s best-known stories.
Everyone is warmly invited to celebrate the Izola legend!
