A film that reflects on different approaches to designing educational systems – and the consequences these approaches have for students and teachers.
Ten-year-old Palko, who has moved from Germany back to his native Hungary, struggles to adapt to the stricter school system, as he is used to the more relaxed atmosphere of German schools. Palko is accustomed to talking and eating during class and working entirely at his own pace. Since he also has trouble following instructions, he is quickly labelled a “problem child.” The new literature teacher, Juci, tries to comfort him and gain his trust, as she too supports a different approach to learning. However, by doing so, she risks becoming an outcast among the teaching staff, just like Palko.
“I grew up in the United States. When I was nine, we moved back home. I experienced the return as a cultural shock. It was 1996, which means the difference between the two countries was even greater back then. This topic still stays with me. I have always felt like an outsider, and I have thought a lot about that feeling.”
