On Thursday, 4 December 2025, at 7:00 PM, the film SEMMELWEIS (Lajos Koltai, Hungary, 2023, 127 min) will be screened at the Art Cinema Odeon, in collaboration with the Liszt Institute and the Hungarian Cultural Centre Ljubljana.
The story is set in 1847, when a mysterious epidemic ravages the Vienna maternity clinic. Doctor Ignaz Semmelweis attempts to fight puerperal fever, resisting the traditional methods of his time. The Hungarian doctor of German origin Ignaz Semmelweis (1818–1865) is considered one of the pioneers of antiseptic procedures and was known as the “saviour of mothers.”
The biographical drama was directed by the renowned Hungarian cinematographer and filmmaker Lajos Koltai. SEMMELWEIS was the most-watched Hungarian film of 2023, and in 2024 it won six awards at the national film festival: Best Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Production Design, and Original Score.
The film will be screened with Slovenian subtitles. Admission is free.
After the screening, the director of the Liszt Institute, Dr. Zoltán Thuróczy, will hold a conversation in English with the lead actress Katica Nagy.
