Herbarium of the University of Primorska – part of the global network of herbaria and botanical research

As part of the European Heritage Days, the Izola City Library and the study circle Drevesa pripovedujejo are organising a lecture entitled “Herbarium of the University of Primorska – part of the global network of herbaria and botanical research”.

Dr Peter Glasnović will present the development of the Herbarium of the University of Primorska. The herbarium collection of UP FAMNIT, which has been growing since 2008, now contains more than 6,000 specimens of seed plants, ferns, mosses and macroalgae. Geographically, the collection focuses on the western Balkan Peninsula and the south-eastern Alps, with particular emphasis on collecting and preserving material from Istria and Slovenian flora.

Thanks to the efforts of Dr Peter Glasnović from the Department of Biodiversity at UP FAMNIT, the Herbarium of the University of Primorska was included in the international Index Herbariorum register in 2024. It is the fourth herbarium in Slovenia to be internationally registered and has joined a global network of more than 3,500 herbaria.

Dr Peter Glasnović shares his extensive knowledge of the plant world with international, professional and wider audiences. In 2025, he received the Prometheus of Science Award of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts for his work.

The aim of the UP Herbarium is to become part of the global scientific community and contribute to the development of botanical research in the region and beyond. Its future goals include organising and digitising the entire collection, which will also make information more accessible to the general public.

The lecture will take place in the reading room of the Izola City Library.
