Like most of the stories Mann wrote before 1930, Mario and the Sorcerer is inspired by Thomas Mann's personal experiences. The writer spent the summer of 1926 with his family in the Italian resort town of Forte dei Marmi, where his family also experienced several unpleasant events. The novella is written in the first person, so Thomas Mann and his family become one of the characters of the story. It is set in a fictional Italian seaside town where a German family watches helplessly as their holiday takes a turn for the worse.
The big history is mirrored in small, seemingly insignificant and mundane details. In the midst of general, intangible unease, there is the murder of Charade, who used hypnosis to manipulate people and draw out their dirtiest secrets.
Mann has described the hidden and almost imperceptible ways in which certain ideologies and fears spread among people, and his thinking also speaks to modern man, as it is a metaphor for the threats of all dictatorships and the dangers of political rhetoric.
