The ceremonial opening of the 33rd Primorska Summer Festival will feature Goldoni’s comedy, which humorously reveals human weaknesses through the lively events surrounding everyday encounters in a café. First performed in 1750 under the title La bottega del caffè, the play was translated into Slovenian by Srečko Fišer and directed by Janusz Kica.
A distinctive feature of the production is its site specific setting, as the Loža/Loggia city café on Koper’s central square becomes the stage for the performance. The play pays tribute to café culture and its role in shaping the daily rhythm of urban life, bringing together different social classes and creating a space for relationships, gossip and conflicting interests.
On the “stage of the world”, the destinies of townspeople, swindlers and self proclaimed noblemen come together. Relationships intersect, ranging from love to intrigue and malicious intentions. As an exceptional observer of human nature, Goldoni masterfully portrays each character. He brings timeless human weaknesses to the forefront and subtly explores the tensions between social norms and the desire for freedom.
