Concert: Klapa Skala Gropada – Summer in the Park

Klapa Skala was founded in Gropada, somewhat quietly, in the autumn of the pandemic year 2020. Sadly, that summer the village mixed choir Skala-Slovan had ceased its activities. Following a sad event in the village, a group of five singers came together and sang several songs of mourning at a friend’s funeral. When they met again, their shared passion for singing was rekindled, and they decided to try forming a male vocal ensemble.

To fill a gap in the local musical scene, they chose a repertoire of Dalmatian songs, a style of music very close to all their hearts. And, as luck would have it, they found a young, professionally trained and enthusiastic conductor and artistic director from Istria, more precisely from Buzet: Lora Pavletić. This year, accompanist Petra Grace Zoppolato, a young student at the “G. Tartini” Conservatory in Trieste, also joined the group.

Over these five years, the artistic director has helped Klapa Skala build up a repertoire extensive enough for full-length concerts, of which there have already been quite a few, alongside an even greater number of shorter performances in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia.

Every year, the group takes part in the Primorska poje choral festival. In 2024, they also performed two original songs at two festivals: at Istroveneto with the song Vien, performing in Izola (where they won second place in the audience vote) and in Buje (where they received first prize for the best arrangement), and at Večeri dalmatinske pisme 2024 with the song Ako ti je ža in Kaštel Kambelovac, near Split.

Every September, the group also organises the klapa festival Klapski večer in their home village of Gropada.
